Playmates Voltron

Mixing things up a bit. Let's have one forum for toy discussion. We can have multiple threads, or just one thread, doesn't matter, but let's try having it all in one place for a while and see if that doesn't help discussion. '

And just a reminder... we don't really mod... anything... so thread drift is not a problem. However I left the General forums because some topics require more time/seriousness/devotion... I.E. more than "drift"

All the other toy forums are under archives, so we can bring them back if everyone hates this.

I was hugely disappointed when the first Voltron stuff hit and there were no pilot figures. Looks like they'll be coming before too much longer, though:

I'm concerned about the goofy-looking hip design and the apparent lack of ankle joints, but they look decent otherwise. Of course, now I wonder why there's not a figure of Allura or Corran, but I guess we can't have everything.

Their new Panosh Place-style giant lions with enormous cockpits for the full-sized pilot figures are mildly amusing, but I can't imagine why you'd want them. The lions don't seem to assemble, and they're not any better articulated than any of the other Lions they've already released. I guess they're a little bigger, but that's about it.

I can see how Pidge was able to hide her true status. She's built like a miniature football player!

And why do the guys that come with the lions have painted visors? That looks awful! I guess their helmets are not removable like the ones with the Paladin weapons.

But I will say that those die cast versions of the transforming lions look AMAZING! They look so much better than the originals (I'm guessing they're smaller too, which is a plus; the first transforming Voltron is a little on the huge side).

I would not be surprised if the paladins that come with the lions are also 5 POA and not painted at all on their backs. I guess Playmates might surprise me, but I'm not counting on it.

I have to wonder how those die cast lions work. It seems like the legs must just pull off or something; they don't seem to have any place to hide anything.

(And I agree on Pidge. I wonder if she just uses the same body as everyone else with shorter legs.)

I saw a review on the plastic transforming lions. The red and green had hollow torsos that swung open for the front legs to fold into (they swing around diagonally so that the elbows almost touch and the "hood" folds back down on them, hiding them away). The lower portions of the hind legs folded into the hollow thighs on all the lions. And the forelimbs on the yellow and blue folded behind the legs into heel spurs (as they are on the yellow lion in the display). I suspect these lions are pretty much scaled-down versions of those and work the same way.

It's pretty impressive engineering, honestly. But I do hope the proportions come out a little better on these. The plastic Voltron had a really skinny waist and slight gorilla arms. He looked good but not 100% right.

Well, that's why you buy the big transforming set and also the non-transforming big articulated Voltron with the lights and sounds. Then you can display Voltron in both forms, and Playmates gets more of your money.
