I saw his review. He clearly thought the film was pretty unnecessary (no arguments, there).

But what was the point you hadn't heard?

Our own resident movie reviewer seems to have generally liked it:

The one that b0b mentioned; that it's pretty anti-male in addition to being pro-female. I suppose I shouldn't be all the surprised, but it's a shame.

Then again, I don't see why they didn't just do basically Extreme Ghostbusters; a younger, more diverse team (with a female or two) takes over from the old guys. I still think that series was fantastic.

He also said "photon pack", indicating that he's a hack fraud sellout. ;)

Honestly, I'm starting to feel like all the reviews (I've dipped in a little now) are more concerned with reviewing the other reviews/internet reaction than they are with the movie, which seems universally to be regarded as okay, but not particularly great, and not at all worth the effort. Which is what I'd expected. The trailers weren't funny, and the over-the-top "you're clearly a misogynist if you haven't bought ten tickets already" reactions to the predictable "ruining my childhood" online commentary didn't do anything to endear it to anybody.

Basically, a cheap cash-in movie happened to hit the sweet spot between outraged nerds and outraged social justice warriors, and neither side is going to win, because now they're entrenched. One side is going to continue making excuses/praising it for being "empowering" and the other is going to continue to hate it for being disrespectful to a classic. And, really, all it deserved was the same shrug and forget that every other cash-in reboot deserves.

Photon pack
Heli, you're right, I'm a hack.

It's oddly middle of the road. Had they stuck more to the comedy side I would have been more enthusiastic about it. It's the final act that spoils some of the fun.

In the end I still liked Evolution more. That was a Ghostbusters clone with at least some new wrinkles to it and a interesting cast dynamic.

To be fair, science fiction has made this distinction more difficult than it should be. For example, in Star Trek the USS Enterprise utilizes "photon torpedoes," but in Star Wars Luke Skywalker destroys the Death Star with a pair of "proton torpedoes."

I figure this is the reason for the mistake. JKL was writing, and remembering the confusion between the two in sci-fi historically, resolved it in his mind with his massive doctorate level understanding of physics, surmising that the beams the Ghostbusters employ emit a great deal of light and somewhat resemble both waves and particles. And so, he went with photons.

So I have to disagree with Heli. JKL is neither a hack nor a fraud.

(Absolute worst case scenario, he's just a sellout. At the very least that makes him no worse of a movie reviewer than, say, Peter Travers. ;))

Rough opening weekend. I blame the patriarchy.

PS I hear it's also not going to be released in China. No idea if that's true, but not being able to hope for big foreign returns sounds like a bad thing.

Seems odd considering China has the ability to save bad movie openings. see: Warcraft

I hear it's something about them not wanting movies that seem to promote the supernatural, or something.

Anyway, Richard Roeper was not a fan:

And got the expected social media attacks:

(Great title on that second one.)

Did the Half in the Bag guys love it, or are they horrible racist misogynist basement dwelling mouth-breathers?
