Hey, I like the Pillows. First time I heard of them.

As for the punk, I've tried for years to like it in general, but it doesn't do much for me. The closest I got into punk was listening to Nirvana's first album, Bleach, which has crazy energy.

My nostalgia trip continues. After listening heavily to Soundgarden's Superunknown (for the 20th year anniversary of its release)....

Hey, The Pillows! I haven't heard them in years. I need to bust out my FLCL soundtrack again.

Admittedly, this is a cover, but it's the first way I heard Linda Linda, so I like it better than the original.

The movie it's from (Linda Linda Linda) is pretty good, as I recall. It's been years.

For comparison, here's the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP8Z-uXkzGo

That's pretty cool.

The opening guitar stuff reminded me of "Enter Sandman".

Probably nothing new, exactly, but still rockin' in full 80s style - The Protomen:

I first heard these guys on the Video Game High School web series. That's worth a look, too. I'm pretty sure the whole series is still available on Netflix (or Youtube, for that matter).

Just for the heck of it, here's another from the VGHS soundtrack. "Tell Me How You Died" by Handsome as Sin:

(NSFW lyrics warning on that one.)

Powerglove: Gotta Catch Em All

They do metal covers of cartoon/Video game/whatever themes.

The theme to Tetris is also pretty good.

I heard this mentioned on the radio today and looked it up. The original Otis Redding version of Respect. It's a very different song from the Aretha version. From the male perspective, he basically pleads with his wife to respect him, going so far as to say it's fine if she does him wrong as long as she pays him some respect when he's home.

The last couple of days my Spotify has been dominated by Great Big Sea. They do sea shanties and Irish pub songs, and they really scratch that itch for something that's both novelty and danceable (as well as musically excellent). Here are my fave two:

"The Night Pat Murphy Died" (aka "Paddy Murphy," depending on the album; sadly I couldn't find an official video for this one): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7Bsb-8pxG8

"Captain Kidd" (this one is a shanty your crew can sing in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, although GBS's version is a bit jazzier):

BONUS: "Mari-Mac":
